The Mahone Bay Legion Swing Band was created in 2009 by members of the Mahone Bay Legion Band in an attempt to attract new players to a more relevant style of music. While still providing the Legion with the music it requires at events such as Remembrance Day, the band also entertains members at Legion events, provides period music of the Swing through Rock and Roll eras at the summer bandstand (Thursday evenings) and holds a couple of dances each year to give local residents an opportunity to trip the light fantastic to music that they remember from their youth. We are also introducing Big Band music to a new generation, some of whom make up our player ranks. Our members come from as far away as Liverpool and Halifax and include teenagers through to those very well retired. The band rehearses at the Legion every Thursday night from 7-9 pm September through June. In July and August, our rehearsal from 7-8 pm is moved to the Mahone Bay bandstand in the middle of town where we entertain locals and tourists who wish to sit and listen to sounds across the waters of the Bay. Our annual “Spring Into Summer” dance is held at the Legion on the first or second Saturday of June. At Christmas we add a swing flavour to favourite carols and tunes with a joint concert with the Riverport and Area Community Choir. The band provides a range of benefit concerts in our feeder communities of Mahone Bay and Lunenburg, and we also are part of local concerts. We play a few private concerts for local hospitals and seniors homes. The band is available for private parties, weddings etc., and can even put together a Dixieland combo for that special event overlooking the harbour!
